For Fans Of: My Chemical Romance, Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, Three Days Grace
Written By - Randall
Why This Rocks: You can stop scratching lines in your face Atreyu fans, there’s a new band - a better band - for you to headbang the heck away to. Let me introduce you to Hell or Highwater, the California rock band with enough awesomeness to make Mr. T feel like crying. I kid you not, just give it a listen, give it 30 seconds of your time - I personally guarantee that you’ll be hooked. A raucous overture of epicness, their sound is one that will rock the rafters of your bedroom roof with a dizzying maelstrom of thunderous, pure, unspoiled rock.
It’s all too often that a band lifts the sound of a well established act but rarely do you come across a band that fuses elements of thunderous genius as well as Hell or Highwater does. Sounding like a mad scientist concoction of My Chemical Romance, Avenged Sevenfold and Atreyu (seriously!) they will rattle your concept of alternative, hard, progressive rock. Much of their inescapably incomparable sound comes from the stirring vocal monsoon of lead singer and Atreyu drummer Brandon Saller. Fans of Saller’s grainy howl will be downright giddy to hear him at his blazing best here. Think of every clean vocal moment that you ever loved about the classic Lead Sails Paper Anchor album and you’ll find it expertly wrapped up here. But that’s just the beginning of this incredible musical experience.
Don’t misunderstand all the glorification of Saller’s other band, what makes this band extraordinary is the surrounding fog of theatrical melodic rock. Seriously, MCR fans this has gotta be freaking you out a bit isn’t it? I’m not saying anything negative about that, the sound is rip roaring and so full of insanity that truly it will color your life with the chaos of trouble. Guitarists Matt Pauling and Neal Tiemann artfully weave together a grinding, blended, cavalcade of energetic melody. Joey Bradford and Captain Carl - the most badass kick-drumming moniker ever - build one of the most stable foundations of bass/drum interplay that you will ever be privileged enough to hear. Part old school axe, part new generation chain saw, all fire and bristome, don’t let the alternative label throw you off; this hard rocking, heavy metal glory will floor you.
Hell or Highwater is beyond good, heck they’re even better than great - they are nothing short of astonishing. Try to forgive yourself for not hearing of them sooner, you’ve still got time to get acquainted with their staggering myriad sound. Let their bewildering romp through the fields of hard rocking goodness deep fry your brain cells with a potent dose of concentrated magnificence. They’re not an Atreyu clone, they’re more than My Chemical Romance… They’re Hell or Highwater baby.
